With Giudizio Universale, we have taken the Italian State to court for climate inaction. We demand stronger measures to respond to the climate emergency.
The Campaign
Together with a broad coalition of organizations and individuals, we have called on the State to do more for the climate.
Between desertification and increasingly prolonged droughts, the risks are high. Heatwaves, floods, and rising sea levels threaten to sacrifice large parts of the country to a changing climate.
There is no more time to lose: the “Last Judgment” has arrived!
The message from the scientific community is clear: the climate emergency is the greatest threat to our society. Current targets are insufficient. In many countries, movements and citizens are taking States, institutions, and corporations to court.
They do so to force them to implement truly effective policies. We have decided to take legal action in Italy as well. We are calling on the Italian State to adopt stronger measures to address climate change and reverse its course.

About Us
We are residents, students, scientists, lawyers, activists, and volunteers from environmental organizations, local committees, research centers, and independent media.
We are people who carry forward, every day, small and large struggles for the environment, for the climate, and for rights.
Like millions of others around the world, we mobilize to demand social, environmental, and climate justice, aware that climate change increasingly translates into inequalities and violations of fundamental human rights.
Our case — the first climate lawsuit brought against the Italian State — was launched on 5 June 2021, on behalf of more than 200 claimants, including citizens, minors, and associations.

First-instance ruling: the court chose not to decide
After more than two and a half years of hearings and thousands of pages of documentation, the first-instance ruling delivered a decision that avoids addressing the substance of our claims. The judge chose not to decide and not to consider the impacts of the climate crisis on people’s rights. But the Giudizio Universale campaign does not stop here!
