What does SystR work on?
Context
The climate crisis is not only environmental: it is systemic. Its impacts cut across sectors, territories, and communities, deepening social vulnerabilities and inequalities. Responding to this complexity requires integrated approaches that bring together science, governance, and participation.
In this context, SystR was launched as a European project funded by Horizon Europe – Mission Adaptation to Climate Change. It aims to strengthen the systemic resilience of cities and territories through innovative and inclusive solutions.
The project promotes nature-based solutions (NBS), collaborative governance models, and new tools to measure the social, environmental, and technological impacts of adaptation policies.
SystR addresses climate challenges through a multi-actor and transdisciplinary approach, involving local administrations, universities, businesses, social organizations, and communities to build ecosystems of resilience capable of adapting, absorbing, and transforming climate risks into opportunities for justice and innovation.
The Project
SystR proposes an innovative approach to connect science and public policy, developing solutions that address cross-sectoral climate risks. Bringing together partners from six European countries, the project places nature-based solutions (NBS) at its core to accelerate urban resilience, promote bottom-up governance, and strengthen community participation.
What is the goal?
The goal is to develop Integrated Resilience Ecosystems (IREs): systems that combine technological, social, environmental, and institutional approaches to respond to climate challenges in a coordinated and inclusive way. Three demonstrator sites — Guadeloupe, Banská Bystrica, and Rome — and three replicator sites — Galicia, Strasbourg, and Egaleo — will test, adapt and scale the solutions.
Rome Demonstrator Site
At the Rome demonstrator site, in Largo Perestrello (Torpignattara), A Sud will coordinate community engagement and the testing of participatory, educational, and environmental justice practices. The work aims to integrate the social dimensions of climate adaptation and to facilitate knowledge exchange between research, institutions, and residents, fostering networks of solidarity, collective care, and place-based innovation.
